Transmissions

"Transmissions" is a composition for 16 voices, computer and interactive video.

The idea behind the piece is to create a choir composition where each voice is treated as an individual component rather than a collective part of a homogeneous sound body. That said, there are still parts where the voices works in a "normal" choir fashion but there are several places where each singer acts more as a soloist although in conjunction with other soloists, more often in a semi improvised fashion. The electroacoustic part of the composition mainly uses the voices as it´s raw material and develops and stretches the timbal and procedural vocal content in various ways as a complement and sometimes self carrying element. The main part of the voice material used for developing the electroacoustic part was recorded during a workshop I had with the choir in December 2011.

Finally the idea was to let the singers actually create the video part in real time using their voices as "controllers" for the actual animation of the visuals. This has been implemented to a certain extent, however due to limitations in time I had to simplify the interactive video software somewhat in order to reach a meaningful counterpoint between the vocals and the visuals. The intention is however to continue to develop the video software for a more thorough implementation of the original idea in the future.
