Walls of light

I was invited to make an installation/performance for a quite special building in Italy. The building was an old factory (fabbrica) where the facade had been equipped with a sound system and LED lights in 50 windows. I had my remote recidency during one week meaning I was sitting at home sending and trying my software at the venue over internet. It was quite challenging as a way of working since everything was rather slow. With only one week at my disposal I realized the making something interesting with the lights was not going to be easy. Instead of programming each window light separately, I created a number of videos which were divided into a 5x10 grid where each part of the grid was sent to the window LEDs as relative intensity. This made it possible to create complex moving light patterns with a minimum of programming. I also made a grid sequenser mostly for use in the second techno part. The various videos were then syncronized with the music to make things even more interesting. The result as seen during night time was quite striking.

This short video excerpt is a screen capture of the simulation I did before actually performing the piece in Italy. Because my computer was just a bit to slow to both play and record the piece, it´s a bit sloppy...

However it´s still better than the video documentation that was made during performance...
